When Should You Replace Your Timing Belt?
As a rule of thumb, your timing belt (cam belt) should be replaced every 4 to 5 years or every 40,000 to 100,000 miles — whichever comes first. The exact figure varies a lot by make and model, so always check your handbook. Replacing it on schedule is one of the most worthwhile things you can do, because a snapped belt can wreck your engine.
What does the timing belt do?
The timing belt keeps your engine's moving parts perfectly synchronised — it makes sure the valves and pistons operate in time with each other. It's a rubber-toothed belt that wears gradually and, unlike many parts, usually gives little warning before it fails.
How often should it be replaced?
There's no single answer — it's set by the manufacturer. Common intervals fall between 40,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 4 to 5 years if you cover fewer miles than that. Time matters as much as mileage because rubber perishes with age, so a low-mileage older car can still be due.
Your service handbook lists the exact interval for your car. If you're not sure, give us your registration and we can advise.
Warning signs of a worn timing belt
- ▸A ticking or rattling noise from the front of the engine
- ▸The engine becoming harder to start
- ▸Rough running or misfiring
- ▸Visible cracks, fraying or oil contamination on the belt
- ▸Most importantly: the belt being past its scheduled interval
Why a snapped belt is so serious
Most modern engines are 'interference' engines, which means if the timing belt snaps, the pistons and valves can collide. That causes major internal damage — bent valves, damaged pistons, sometimes a write-off engine. The repair bill for a snapped belt is many times the cost of replacing it on schedule, which is exactly why this is a job you don't want to put off.
What about the water pump?
On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind the same covers. Because most of the cost is in the labour to get to it, it's often sensible to replace the water pump at the same time as the belt — saving you paying for that labour twice. We'll advise whether that applies to your car.
