When Does My Car Need a Service? The Complete Guide
As a general rule, your car needs a service every 12 months or every 12,000 miles — whichever comes first. High-mileage drivers may benefit from an interim service every 6 months. Regular servicing protects your warranty, your resale value and your reliability.
Interim vs full service — what's the difference?
An interim service is a lighter check, usually recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles for people who do a lot of miles. It typically covers an oil and filter change plus a visual safety inspection. A full service is more thorough — recommended every 12 months or 12,000 miles — and includes everything in an interim plus additional filters, fluid top-ups and more detailed checks.
A full service usually includes an oil and oil-filter change, air-filter check or replacement, spark plugs where due, a brake inspection, and checks of all major fluids, the battery, lights, tyres, steering and suspension.
Manufacturer schedule vs mileage
Your handbook will list the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, often as a 'whichever comes first' between time and mileage. Following it matters most while your car is under warranty, as missed services can invalidate cover. Once out of warranty, an independent garage like ours can service your car to the same standard — often at a lower price — without affecting anything.
Warning signs your car needs a service
Don't wait for the schedule if your car is telling you something's wrong. Book it in sooner if you notice:
- ▸A warning light — especially the oil or engine-management light
- ▸Rough idling, hesitation or a drop in performance
- ▸Worse fuel economy than usual
- ▸Unusual noises — knocking, squealing or grinding
- ▸Dark, gritty engine oil on the dipstick
- ▸It's been over a year since the last service
Why regular servicing is worth it
Skipping services to save money usually costs more in the long run. A neglected car burns more fuel, wears out parts faster and is far more likely to break down. Regular servicing also keeps a documented history, which protects your resale value — buyers pay more for a car with a full service record. And small problems get caught early, before they become expensive ones.
