5 Signs Your Brakes Need Replacing
The five clearest signs your brakes need replacing are: a high-pitched squeal, a grinding noise, the car pulling to one side when braking, a soft or spongy pedal, and vibration through the pedal. Any of these means you should get your brakes checked straight away — they're the most important safety system on your car.
1. Squealing or squeaking
A high-pitched squeal when you brake is often the built-in wear indicator on your brake pads — a small metal tab designed to make noise when the pad material gets low. It's an early warning, not an emergency, but it means your pads are near the end of their life and should be replaced soon.
2. Grinding
A harsh grinding noise is more serious. It usually means the pads have worn down completely and metal is now scraping against your brake discs. At this point you're damaging the discs every time you brake, turning a cheaper pad job into a much pricier pad-and-disc replacement. Don't keep driving on grinding brakes.
3. Pulling to one side
If your car veers left or right when you brake, the braking force is uneven between the wheels. This can be a sticking caliper, uneven pad wear or a brake-fluid problem. Beyond being unsafe, it's an MOT failure — so it needs looking at promptly.
4. A soft or spongy pedal
If the brake pedal sinks further than usual or feels soft underfoot, you may have air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak in the system. This directly affects stopping power and should be treated as urgent.
5. Vibration through the pedal
A pulsing or juddering felt through the brake pedal (when you're not on an ABS stop) often points to warped brake discs. Warping happens through heat and wear and means the disc surface is no longer flat. The fix is usually disc replacement.
How long should brakes last?
Brake pads typically last between 20,000 and 50,000 miles, depending heavily on how and where you drive. Lots of stop-start town driving — common around the hills of the Black Country — wears them faster than steady motorway miles. Discs last longer, often two or more sets of pads, but should be replaced when worn or warped.
What does brake work cost?
Replacing front brake pads is one of the more affordable repairs; replacing pads and discs together costs more because of the extra parts and labour. The exact figure depends on your vehicle — call us on 01384 78504 and we'll give you an honest quote after a proper inspection. Catching the problem at the squealing stage, before it grinds, almost always saves money.
Brakes are not something to gamble with. If you've noticed any of these five signs, book a brake check at our Brierley Hill garage — it could be a quick, cheap fix, and it could keep you safe.
