How Much Does an MOT Cost in 2026?
The most you'll pay for a car MOT in 2026 is £54.85 — this maximum fee is set by the DVSA and hasn't changed. Many garages, including ours, charge less. The test itself is a fixed price; any repairs needed to pass are separate.
What is the maximum MOT fee?
The DVSA caps the MOT test fee at £54.85 for a standard car (Class 4) and £58.60 for vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats. Motorcycles are capped lower, at £29.65. These are maximums — a garage can charge less, and many do to stay competitive. At John Downes Garage we keep our MOT pricing fair and transparent, with no hidden add-ons.
What does an MOT actually test?
An MOT checks that your vehicle meets the minimum road-safety and environmental standards. It is not a service and does not check engine condition, clutch or gearbox. The tester inspects:
- ▸Lights — headlamps, indicators, brake lights and reflectors
- ▸Brakes — efficiency, balance and condition of pads and discs
- ▸Steering and suspension — play, wear and damage
- ▸Tyres — tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and overall condition
- ▸Exhaust and emissions — within legal limits for your engine
- ▸Seatbelts, wipers, washers, horn and mirrors
- ▸Bodywork and structure — no sharp edges or excessive corrosion
What are the most common MOT failures?
Year after year, the same few faults account for most MOT failures — and many are cheap to avoid. The biggest culprits are lighting and signalling (a blown bulb can cost under £10 to fix), tyres, brakes, and issues with the driver's view of the road such as worn wiper blades. A surprising number of cars fail on something as simple as low screenwash.
What if my car fails?
If your vehicle fails, you'll get a refusal certificate listing the problems. If you leave the car with the same garage for repairs and it's re-tested within 10 working days, the re-test is usually free. That's one good reason to use a garage that can both test and repair — like ours — so you're not paying twice or driving an unroadworthy car elsewhere.
How to prepare for your MOT
- ▸Check all your lights work, including number-plate lights
- ▸Top up the screenwash and check your wipers don't smear
- ▸Look over your tyres for tread and damage
- ▸Make sure the registration plate is clean and legible
- ▸Clear the boot and footwells so the tester can access seatbelts
A few minutes of checks can be the difference between a pass and a re-test. As a DVSA-approved testing station in Brierley Hill, we're happy to advise West Midlands drivers on anything that looks borderline before test day.
